Among the rarest of penguins, the endangered Yellow-eyed Penguin, Megadyptes antipodes, is the only species in the genus Megadyptes. It is found only along the southeast coast of New Zealand and on New Zealand's Auckland Islands, Campbell Island, and Stewart Island. It has a yellowish-brown head, a yellow band extending back from the eyes, and yellow or gray-yellow eyes.
The yellow-eyed penguin, endemic to New Zealand, is called HoiHo in Maori. It is a medium to large sized penguin, averaging about 23 inches in height and reaching up to 30 inches. It weighs about 14 pounds. It can lose up to 8 pounds during molting season. While it has a black back and white front like most penguins, the yellow-eyed penguin has more brown than other species, with a brownish head and a brownish underside on its wings. Juveniles have gray eyes, which later change to yellow. Yellow-eyed penguins have a distinctive yellow band that goes back from the eyes and connects at the back of the head. The beak is orange-brown.
Yellow-eyed penguins feed on squid and fish, especially red cod, blue cod, opal fish, sprat, silversides, and ahuru. They may travel as far as 11 miles from their nesting areas to feed, and they can dive up to 427 feet for food, though the average dive depth is 112 feet. One day's feeding requires an estimated 200 dives. They can often be seen exiting the water at dusk in small groups, especially at the penguin viewing sites at Oamaru, Moeraki, Dunedin and the Catlins.
