Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park has long been known for its dramatic
landscape and its ease of viewing for visitors. Including
over 505 miles of land it is called familiarly the
“world’s only drive-in volcano”. On March 19th 2008
there was an explosion in the Halemaumau crater of
Kilauea volcano, which is overlooked by the Jaggar
Museum and the Volcano hotel. This was the first
eruption of Kilauea since 1982, and it scattered
debris over 74 acres of the park. A major sulfur
dioxide gas vent is still pouring tons of fumes and
ash into the sky in a plume over a mile high that
has been constant for three months now. In addition,
though not related to the Halemaumau crater explosion,
there is increased lava flow from a new vent in the
side of the volcano. The lava flows overland and
through lava tunnels to exit into the ocean with
spectacular steam plumes and night glows.
