Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and particularly the Waikupanaha ocean entry, where molten lava meets the ocean, is one of the few places on earth where people can witness what the earth may have been like many millions of years ago. While the moon, planets and stars glow from above, fiery cascades of lava spew forth from Kilauea, blanketing the sky and sending up plumes of steam, ash and volcanic gases. Waterspouts sometimes form in the nearby ocean waters. Viewers may tempt fate by approaching unstable lava benches, prone to collapse without warning. Is a spectacular photo worth dying for? On the Big Island of Hawaii, photographers aim to both record these extraordinary sights and live to tell their stories in digital stock photo galleries. To see sights like these, visit the new viewing point at Kalapana, on the souteast side of the Big Island, about 30 minutes from Hilo. Walking is safer in daylight, but the views are more spectacular at night. Bring water and bandaids (for when you slip and cut yourself on sharp lava rock), and stay on the trail!

Picture of people on the bench at sunrise. Large chunks of lava are blown into the air building a large littoral cone, usually small cones built near active ocean entries, the cones are constructed of tephra from steam explosions that are sometimes produced when 1,150 degree C lava enters the 25 degree C ocean.
