Blacknose Shark

The blacknose shark, Carcharhinus acronotus, is a smallish requiem shark that inhabits the tropical and warm temperate east coasts of the Americas. It is recognizable by its long snout with a black spot on the underside, and its large eyes. There are no confirmed attacks on humans by this shark, but it has been observed performing a threat display before divers (arching its back and lowering its pectoral fins). It is of minor importance to commercial fisheries.
Blacknose sharks can be found along warm Western Atlantic coasts, from North Carolina to southern Brazil, and in the Gulf of Mexico. They are an inshore species, with juveniles favoring shallow water, and adults inhabiting waters of 9 m (30 ft) or more. Adults may grow to 140 cm (55 in) and weigh about 10 kg (22 lbs). They are sexually mature at 2 years and have a longevity of about 11 years. They are viviparous and give birth to 3-6 live pups.
This species is slender, with a long pointed snout and large eyes. It is gray or brownish gray, with a white underside, and it has a characteristic black spot below the tip of its snout. It is a fast swimmer and feeds on octopus and fish, such as pinfish, croakers, anchovies, porgies, boxfish and pufferfish. It sometimes schools with other blacknose sharks, and is preyed upon by larger sharks. It is considered Vulnerable but is not listed on the IUCN Red List.
