The great
white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is the largest
predatory fish on Earth, reaching lengths of more
than 20 feet and weighing up 5,000 lb. They are found
in coastal surface waters throughout the world, with
greater concentrations off the southern coasts of
Australia, off South Africa, California, and Mexico's
Isla Guadalupe.
Great white sharks have slate-gray upper bodies
to blend in with the rocky coastal sea floor, but
get their name from their white underbellies. They
are streamlined swimmers with powerful tails that
can propel them through the water at speeds of up
to 15 miles per hour. Great whites can leave the
water completely, breaching, when attacking prey
from underneath. Their mouths are lined with up to
3,000 serrated, triangular teeth arranged in several
rows, and they have an exceptional sense of smell
to detect prey. Great white sharks are carnivorous,
and primarily eat fish, including rays, tuna, and
smaller sharks, dolphins, porpoises, whale carcasses,
seals, fur seals and sea lions, and sometimes sea
turtles. Populations have clearly declined to a point
at which the great white shark is now considered
endangered, due to overfishing and accidental catching
in gill nets.
