The Greenland
shark, Somniosus microcephalus, is a large
shark native to the waters of the North Atlantic
Ocean around Greenland and Iceland, but can occasionally
be found in the Gulf of Maine, or as far south as
the Gulf of Mexico. Greenland sharks live further
north than any other species and is the only species
found regularly in these cold waters. During the
summer the Greenland shark inhabits depths of 600
to 2400 feet. In the winter, it can be found near
the surface and near the edge of ice flows. It is
a very large shark, comparable to the size of a great
white. The average size is 11 to 16 feet, but the
largest recorded specimen of this species was 21
feet and weighed 2,250 lbs. The Greenland shark eats
char, halibut, herring, lumpfish and salmon among
other fishes. It also eats marine mammals such as
seals, and sea lions. is ovoviviparous and can have
litters of up to 10 pups. Adults can be brown, black,
purplish gray or slate gray, while the sides may
have a purple tinge, or may have dark bands or white
spots. It has small eyes, both dorsal fins are small
and of equal size, the caudal fin is asymmetrical.
and there is no anal fin. Greenland sharks are also
known as sleeper shark, gurry shark, ground shark,
grey shark, or by the Inuit Eqalussuaq. The Greenlandshark
suffers from a parasite called a copepod, a whitish-yellow
creature that can be up to 3 inches in size, that
attaches itself to the cornea of the eye. Most sharks
have at least one copepod.
