The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus, eats char, halibut, herring, lumpfish and salmon among other fishes, also marine mammals such as seals, and sea lions. It is a large shark native to the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Iceland, living further north than any other species. The Greenland shark is ovoviviparous and can have litters of up to 10 pups. Adults can be brown, black, purplish gray or slate gray, while the sides may have a purple tinge, or may have dark bands or white spots. Greenland sharks are also known as sleeper shark, gurry shark, ground shark, or grey shark. The Greenlandshark suffers from a parasite called a copepod, a whitish-yellow creature that can be up to 3 inches in size, that attaches itself to the cornea of the eye. Most sharks have at least one copepod.
