The blue
whale, Balaenoptera musculus, is blue-gray
in color, often with lighter gray mottling on
a darker background. Blue whales may be found in
all oceans of the world. They migrate to tropical-to-temperate
waters during winter months to mate and give birth
to calves. They can feed throughout their range,
in polar, temperate, or even tropical waters. There
are four sub-species: Balaenoptera
musculus musculus,
Northern blue whale which inhabits the north Atlantic
and north Pacific; Balaenoptera
musculus intermedia, Antarctic
or Southern blue whale; Balaenoptera
musculus indica,
Indian Ocean blue whale; and Balaenoptera
musculus brevicauda, the pygmy blue whale. In all of them,
the body is long, somewhat tapered, and streamlined,
with the head making up less than one-fourth of its
total body length.
