Blue whales feed on krill, also called zooplankton, as do all rorquals. They eat up to 8,000 lbs (3,600 kg) of krill each day. To capture the krill, they must dive as deep as 100 meters (330), locate the mass of krill, lunge at it and open their mouths, sucking in a large amount of water and krill, plus incidental fish and squid that happen to be in the vicinity. The water is strained through the whales baleen, and the krill is swallowed. Despite the large size of a blue whale's mouth, the throat is narrow, and blue whales can only swallow objects smaller than a typical beach ball.
