The IWC (International Whaling Commission) published data in 2007 indicating that blue whale numbers were increasing at a rate of 7-8% yearly. The Southern Hemisphere is now estimated to be home to some 2,300 blue whales, and the IWC put the total population in all oceans at about 4,500 (in contrast to estimates by other agencies of up to 12,000 worldwide). Pre-exploitation numbers were reckoned to be in the hundreds of thousands. Current dangers to blue whales include accidental ship strikes, entanglement in commercial fishing nets, anthropogenic noise, and global warming, the latter of which may affect krill populations. Stranding of blue whales is considered uncommon.
