In addition to blue whales being the largest animal ever to live on earth (larger even than dinosaurs), they have the distinction of being the loudest animals on earth today. They produce deep, rumbling vocalizations that reach 188 decibels. A jet plane registers a paltry 140 decibels in comparison. Blue whale songs can be detected by instruments as far away as 500 miles. Despite this amazing record, blue whales cannot be heard by humans, as the frequency - 14 Hz - is below the range of human hearing.
