Blue Whale - the World's Largest Marine Mammal

Blue whales are sometimes the subjects of whale watching excursions, as viewing this rare animal is a rare and noteworthy occasion. However, blue whales are not as exciting to watch as humpback whales, as they don't display the humpback's energetic breaches and other exotic behaviors. A blue whale watcher can hope to see its back and dorsal fin as it swims and perhaps its tail flukes as it dives. Because blue whales can stay submerged for as long as 20 minutes, blue whale watching can feature a lot of down time. With extraordinary luck, a whale watcher may witness a blue whale lunge feeding at the surface. Noteworthy blue whale watching destinations include the Channel Islands, near Santa Barbara, CA; San Diego, CA; Los Cabos, Mexico; Tadoussac, Quebec; Kaikoura, New Zealand; Tysfjord, Norway; the Azores, Portugal; Sri Lanka; and Iceland.
