North Atlantic Right whales, or Northern Right Whale, Eubalaena glacialis, are large baleen whales, and is considered the most endangered whale in the world. Three right whale species exist: North Atlantic, Eubalaena glacialis ; North Pacific, Eubalaena japonica; and Southern, Eubalaena australis. They are called right whales because whalers thought the whales were the "right" ones to hunt, as they float when killed and often swim close to shore. Populations were vastly reduced by intensive hunting. Right whales can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh up to 100 tons, with a stocky body, black coloration, although some have white patches on their undersides, no dorsal fin, a large head, and callosities, raised patches of roughened skin, on the head. Two rows of long baleen plates hang from the upper jaw, with about 225 plates on each side. The tail is broad, deeply notched, and all black with a smooth trailing edge. The North Atlantic Right Whale numbers only about 300 individuals. and it is predicted that under current conditions, the population will be extinct in less than 200 years. Threats include ship collisions, entanglement in fishing gear, contaminants, and climate and ecosystem change.
